Family members, friends and colleagues of Professor Viviane Jara Benitez, who passed away on February 26, 2023, at the age of 39, held a public event in front of the Foz do Iguaçu Municipal Hospital, this Monday (26), to commemorate the date.

Participants called for justice and accountability for those involved in the pre-scheduled surgery that resulted in the death of Viviane, who was president of the Union of Teachers and Education Professionals of the Foz do Iguaçu Municipal Public School Network (Sinprefi).

The teacher died ten days after undergoing the procedure to remove her uterus, which took place at the Municipal Hospital. The family claims that there was a medical error.

“Indignation and revolt!” said Viviane Jara Benitez’s sister, Márcia Benitez, quoted by Sinprefi’s press office. “Throughout this year, the indignation has been the same. Our hearts bleed every time we think that everything that happened could have been avoided.”

“We will continue fighting so that those responsible pay for what they did or failed to do,” he added.

At the time, the hospital director, André Di Buriasco, stated that “a medical examination of the medical records was being carried out to determine whether there had been any instance of malpractice or negligence on the part of any other professional, in addition to the surgeon”.

The surgeon was removed from his position and is no longer part of the Municipal Hospital's staff. There is also an investigation at the Regional Medical Council of the State of Paraná (CMR/PR), which was, in December 2023, “in the process of issuing a conclusive report”.
