About shopping and dollars in Paraguay
In addition to the dollar exchange rate in Paraguay, another point to consider when making purchases is the payment method, as there are differences. Also, keep an eye on the prices listed in reais.
Several of the large stores in Ciudad del Este, for example, work with PIX. Purchases with cards are not recommended, as they may be subject to fees for transactions abroad.
During periods when the dollar is high, according to shopkeepers, it is common for some stores in Ciudad del Este to offer “frozen rates”, which are equivalent to a kind of discount. You need to do the math, because the differences are significant.
When returning from Paraguay to Brazil, keep in mind that the tax-free quota for purchases made abroad is US$500 per CPF. Above this limit, the import tax is 50%. To learn more about how the quota works, click here.
