Aida Franco de Lima – OPINION

About ten years ago, there was an advertisement in which children and teenagers said: “I have never seen Brazil win the World Cup.” Because they had never seen Brazil win the World Cup. But an entire generation has not seen a politician go to jail. And now, taking a historic leap, both Brazil and Argentina, eternal rivals on the field, are also tied in politics, more precisely in the police beat. However, politics does not rhyme with jail. There is always a trick to make the law equal for everyone, but for some with a difference. .

On Tuesday, the 10th, several politicians who are serving house arrest were paraded on Brazilian television during their testimonies in the investigation into the attempted coup d'état, which was exposed with the vandalism and invasion of the Three Powers Square on January 8, 2023. And on the other side of the Triple Frontier, the final sentence was handed down by the Supreme Court, sentencing former deputy, senator, vice president and president Cristina Kirchner to six years in prison. She will no longer be able to run for office, but she will be able to enjoy the wealth she has accumulated. She will not go to jail, she will serve her sentence at home. Due to her age, 72, she is entitled to house arrest, without the use of an electronic ankle bracelet, and with the right to security. The accusation is of embezzlement of funds for public works.

On this side, we have already seen the Supreme Court order Lula to watch the sun rise square for 580 days. Another well-known figure, former Rio de Janeiro governor Sérgio Cabral, spent 2.219 days in prison, the equivalent of six years and 22 days in the prison system of the state he governed. Now he is back home too. And many others whose lives the younger generation knows from prison.

Former President Jair Messias Bolsonaro, as well as his loyal squire, federal deputy Carla Zambelli, are also about to go to jail. However, a jail of respect. After all, justice is blind, but not that much. If they are convicted, if they are imprisoned, it will not be for long. And no family member will be left destitute. Political capital is hereditary, as is financial capital. And if you cry a little, just spread the word about PIX.

If there is a good team of lawyers, each one can make the goddess of Justice look around and find a loophole to free the convicted person. I have already written about this. here, this repeated film in which condenados They end up serving their sentences in environments that are, in fact, a dream come true. When prison is converted to house arrest, there is that feeling that crime, for a good portion, does pay off. Oh, and how!

Neither Argentina nor Brazil need to cry. Their heroes continue to live like kings, while their subjects remain divided, like fans fighting among themselves, while at the end of the match the players exchange shirts, shake hands, and the game continues.
