Foz do Iguaçu, a model for today's world

Sociologist José Afonso de Oliveira talks about Foz do Iguaçu being a city of migrants.

Prof. José Afonso de Oliveira – OPINION

Here we live with people from many different origins. A city of migrants, Foz do Iguaçu performs the miracle of harmonious coexistence with its different people, whether foreign or national.

There is no record of any type of accident caused by ethnic problems. It was through living that we learned to live with those who are different. On our streets, women walk around dressed as if they were in their countries of origin in the Middle East.

Here we have a magnificent Sunni mosque and a simpler one belonging to a Shiite group. These are different views and interpretations within Islam, but this is not a reason for local disagreements.

We also live with nature, which is very present in the city, whether in its surroundings with the Iguaçu National Park and its wonderful waterfalls, or in our urbanized streets and avenues and, in some places, forming true green tunnels from the treetops.

This coexistence with nature is fundamental to the survival of humanity today, and here this proximity is something quite natural. Not to mention the birds, which brighten our day with their songs.

But in order to move forward and be a model of coexistence in today's world, we must be concerned about and find feasible solutions for the city's peripheral communities, whose inhabitants are living in slums. Likewise, the high number of homeless people deserves special attention from local residents, who must put pressure on the government to find solutions.

Job creation is essential, as is the construction of housing for low-income residents. Basic health, education and security services must be expanded to serve this large population.

To achieve this, planning is necessary with clear and defined goals, with strictly controlled and enforced deadlines so that, in a short space of time, we can reverse this situation that affects the city as a whole.

Contrary to popular belief, these are people who work in small, informal or non-formal jobs and who need special care. Only then will we have a model city for the current globalized world in which we all live.

José Afonso de Oliveira is a sociologist in Foz do Iguaçu.
