Foz's future depends on competent urban planning

Professor Afonso warns that the city needs to resolve the problems resulting from disorderly growth.

Prof. José Afonso de Oliveira – OPINION

The city of Foz do Iguaçu grew a lot, quickly and without adequate planning. Now, we continue to grow, but problems are beginning to emerge that require detailed studies, that is, planning of its growth and occupation of its territorial space.

For example, regarding mobility, there is an urgent need to study and propose alternatives, otherwise the chaos in our public roads system will only get worse – and, to do so, a lot of study and competent planning are needed.

Since we have Engineering and Architecture courses, which are fundamental for the urban planning of our city, we can then think about creating a public-private entity to facilitate studies and analyses of our reality and present projects for the execution of activities that aim at the necessary improvements.

We must take into account the possibilities for expanding urban density, new occupations for the development of tourism, and options for expanding services in social areas, particularly in the health and education sectors.

But also think about the surroundings of our city with the Iguaçu National Park reserve, how it can be better integrated into our urban space, what is its best use, what are the benefits for the entire population of the city.

Thus, we can and should contemplate the nature in which the city is located, aiming for a greater connection with nature and creating places for leisure and sports.

With a certain frequency, which may be annual, biannual or otherwise, an urban restructuring plan would be presented to be submitted for consideration by society and, subsequently, voted on by the City Council and put into practice by the city government.

All this is aimed at providing Foz do Iguaçu with all the technical and scientific instruments available to guide its present and, even more so, its future within the changes that are now occurring around the world. It will be a new, more welcoming city, where we can live much better.
