Quality health for all

José Afonso de Oliveira, sociologist and university professor, talks about quality healthcare for residents and tourists.

Prof. José Afonso de Oliveira – OPINION

Thinking about quality healthcare for everyone means putting into practice the constitutional principle of equality before the law. To make this a reality, creativity must always be used to present new ways of providing care to those in need, reviving some practices that already existed in the past and that have proven to be very useful and necessary.

The basic issue of healthcare in Foz do Iguaçu today is strongly linked to its management. It is necessary to find good administrators in the area, so that we can have good management – which means always using the available resources to provide the best possible quality care to all those who need care. To this end, we can think about rewarding the best professionals, always focusing on patients.

We can also recall from our recent past the figure of home doctors and nurses, that is, those who visit bedridden or non-bedridden patients who need care. Many patients do not need hospital care or even care at health centers or emergency care units, and can therefore receive good home care without overloading health units.

To improve health management, the Municipal Health Council would be responsible for checking needs and expenses on a monthly basis in order to maintain a balance between the municipal health budget and actual expenditure. This is a very important aspect, as it would ensure good management by not increasing expenses without providing resources.

The service would be free for city residents, while for other patients, whether from municipalities bordering Lake Itaipu, Paraguay or Argentina, the services would be paid for.

It is possible and necessary to think about specific services for tourists who are in the city, but this would not be free either.

With these new activities, we could realize the idea of good service for everyone who needs it, regardless of any other situation.
