In Jardim Guarapuava, in the eastern region of Foz do Iguaçu, Amarilla saw a “condominium” formed by several straw nests. The residential complex is inhabited by the bird popularly known as parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus), a relative of parakeets.
“Every little hole there is a nest,” Amarilla points out. “They live in the middle of the forest, but they came here to live with us. And we have to respect them a lot.”
While cameraman Marcos Labanca was recording the images for the new edition of the series in Foz do Iguaçu, two hawks appeared. The inhabitants of the nests conveniently hid, as they knew that the hawks were looking for prey.
Also known as the monk parakeet, the parakeet has a unique feature. According to Parque das Aves, it is the only species in the macaw and parrot family to build its own nest. The others usually use holes in trees.
Present in Foz do Iguaçu and neighboring municipalities, the bird is native to South America. Its geographic distribution includes parts of Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina and Bolivia.
In addition to parakeet and monk parakeet, already mentioned in the text, the species has regional names such as parakeet, barroso parakeet, catorra, cocota, miranha and papo-branco.
