The Government of Paraná has declared a state of public health alert to combat severe acute respiratory syndromes (SARS). Epidemiological data indicate a 43,17% increase in hospitalizations due to respiratory viruses in the state.

A Resolution No. 1.014/2025, published by the State Health Department (Sesa), details measures that must be adopted by municipalities to prevent and control diseases.

In addition to declaring a state of alert, the resolution establishes the State Action Plan and determines the preparation of municipal action plans. The plan is valid for 90 days.

Data from Sesa reveals that, since the beginning of the year, 10.635 cases and 523 deaths from hospitalized SRAG have been confirmed in Paraná.

Of this total, 991 occurrences and 85 deaths are due to influence. Among the people who died, only nine had been vaccinated against the flu.

Increase in hospitalizations

According to Sesa, the epidemiological data cut for 2024 and 2025, from epidemiological week no. 18 (which considers data from April 27) to week no. 22 (until May 31), indicates an increase of 43,17% in hospitalized cases - there was a jump from 3.164 to 4.530 due to SRAG in the state.

Of the 399 municipalities, 55,6% (222) had cases of hospitalized SARS due to respiratory viruses and 6,3% (25) had already had deaths.

“We are currently experiencing a period of great pressure on hospital bed vacancies, both in wards and in ICUs throughout the state,” says the state health secretary, Beto Preto.

Last week, Sesa authorized the opening of 58 beds in the regions of Curitiba, Foz do Iguaçu and Ponta Grossa.

In the Foz do Iguaçu region, the plan is to open 25 pediatric beds at the Madre Die Hospital, in São Miguel do Iguaçu (15 in the ward and 10 in the children's ICU).

The measure is necessary to relieve pressure on the Padre Germano Lauck Municipal Hospital, which is overcrowded.

Vaccine uptake is low

The resolution also reinforces the importance of flu vaccination. According to data from the National Vaccination Meter, 2.462.215 vaccines were administered in the state, with overall coverage of 42,11% among the elderly, children and pregnant women. The goal is to reach 90% of each target audience.

Among the viruses circulating in the state, the predominant one is influence. Samples recently processed by the Sentinel system indicated that 47,9% (1.267 of 2.643) tested positive for respiratory viruses.

Of the viruses identified, 283 were influence, and 1.009 other respiratory viruses, with 48 samples showing co-detection.

Beyond the influence, covid-19 also remains a point of attention. Between December 29, 2024 and May 31, 2025, 14.600 cases and 94 deaths from covid-19 were reported in people residing in Paraná.

The incidence is 125,9 occurrences per 100 inhabitants, and the mortality rate is 0,81 deaths per 100 inhabitants.
