
A couple was arrested with more than R$480 in cell phones at the Ponte Internacional da Amizade, on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. The arrest took place on the 24th.
The cargo of smuggled cell phones was hidden in the false bottom of a car. The vehicle was trying to cross to the Brazilian side, but was stopped during a routine inspection.
The compartment to try to deceive the inspection was in the fuel tank. The couple is of Paraguayan nationality, according to border authorities.
“When carrying out a detailed inspection, Federal Revenue Service employees found the false bottom in the fuel tank, where the goods were hidden,” reported the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service (RFB).
Cell phones on the Friendship Bridge
According to the institution, 326 cell phones were found, with a total estimated cost of R$488.769,66. The couple was arrested in flagrante delicto and, therefore, sent to the Federal Police.
In addition, the seized goods were taken to the Foz do Iguaçu customs office. And the vehicle was removed to the yard of the IRS.
The crime charged against the pair is smuggling, because it involves attempting to introduce products into the country without paying due taxes. This practice harms the economy and the legal market, according to the IRS.
The agency announced that it continues to intensify the fight against cross-border crimes, such as smuggling, contraband and drug and arms trafficking.
