Police arrest man practicing drug 'abseiling' on Friendship Bridge

He used a vehicle as support to launch the volumes of narcotics on the Brazilian side of the border.

Police arrested a man on Saturday afternoon, the 28th, practicing drug “rappelling” on the Ponte Internacional da Amizade.

The suspect used a vehicle as support to throw volumes of narcotics on the Brazilian side of the border with Paraguay.

The police were alerted to the suspicious activity and, with the support of the Federal Highway Police (PRF), began investigations to verify the situation. During the approach, 33 kilos of marijuana were found in the accused's car.

The suspect and the vehicle were taken to Federal police. The arrest was in flagrante delicto.

Drug “rappel”

“Rapelling” is a practice that was once quite common in drug smuggling and trafficking in the border region. It consists of descending or throwing goods and other illicit substances using ropes, using structures such as bridges or buildings.

The revitalization of the Friendship Bridge, combined with the use of technologies and more intense inspection actions, has contributed to the reduction of this type of crime in recent years.

At the end of this year, the security forces have intensified monitoring at border access points. The special focus of the work is international bridges, highways and airports.
