Located at a strategic point between Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, the Marco das Três Fronteiras became a material cultural heritage of Foz do Iguaçu, after the ceremony held on Monday (19). Authorities and members of the community participated in the event and highlighted the importance of the attraction as a living part of the local identity.

O Landmark of the Three Borders It dates back to the period of Jesuit missions and disputes between colonial empires. Firstly, with the arrival of the first colonizers in the 19th and 20th centuries, the region began to be occupied by people of different nationalities. This helped transform the city into one of the most multicultural hubs in Brazil.

At the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century, Brazil and Argentina faced a stalemate over the territorial delimitation of the region. Subsequently, instead of armed conflict, the diplomatic route was chosen, resulting in the installation of secondary landmarks, including the now listed obelisk.

Cepac and Unila: an essential contribution

This work of historical listing, as well as the protection of Cultural, Historical, Artistic and Environmental Heritage (Municipal Law No. 4.470/2016), is carried out in Foz do Iguaçu by the Municipal Council for Cultural Heritage (Cepac). In this sense, the Federal University for Latin American Integration (Unila) also plays a prominent role.

In June 2024, Guilherme Wojciechowski brought to H2FOZ readers a list of properties of the city that, at the time, were in the process of receiving the listing.

The CEO of the Foz do Iguaçu Cultural Foundation, Dalmont Benites, highlighted that “this act not only preserves collective memory, but also reinforces the importance of peaceful coexistence between nations.”

According to the mayor of Foz do Iguaçu, Joaquim Silva e Luna, the administration is committed to increasingly promoting the city's rich culture. "This is the first landmark in the city. A more than deserved recognition of Foz do Iguaçu's history," he emphasized.

Old City Council Building

In addition to registering the Marco das Três Fronteiras, the ceremony also celebrated the registration of the old Foz do Iguaçu City Council building. The city councilors inaugurated the building in 1972, making it a reference in the consolidation of the local Legislative Power.

For more than three decades, city councilors and authorities have made fundamental decisions for the city's development in this building, which has become a symbol of Foz do Iguaçu's political identity. Located in Praça Getúlio Vargas, the building has preserved its civic and architectural relevance, even after the changes made in the 1980s and 1990s.

Furthermore, the spiral staircase and terraces with flower boxes maintain the coherence of the original project and enhance the building as an example of modernist architecture.

Very good, but what about it, will tourists have to pay to go and see it?
If so, I don't see any advantage.
