Apepu: Iguaçu National Park has a trail in a quilombola community

The tour starts in Foz do Iguaçu and goes to São Miguel do Iguaçu, where the immersion in the Apepu community and the Atlantic Forest begins.

Tourists and communicators from Foz do Iguaçu were able to discover, last Saturday (22), the new tour offered by the company Iguassu Secret Falls. The route takes visitors to the Apepu Quilombola Community, neighboring the Iguaçu National Park.

The start takes place early in the morning at the Iguassu Secret Falls headquarters in Foz do Iguaçu. From there, participants travel 37 kilometers in a jeep-style vehicle along the road that borders the park. At Apepu, they are welcomed by residents of the quilombola area.

After visiting the community chapel, which allows you to learn a little more about the history of the place, the route continues into the park.

According to the organizers, the round trip is almost 6,7 kilometers long. The first part takes place on the Apepu Trail, while the return uses the Aurora Trail, whose name honors one of the founders of the quilombo.

The hike includes stops at the Apepu River, which is suitable for swimming, and the Iguaçu River, whose waters are impressive in their volume and strength. In addition, those who prefer can do the trail by bike, experiencing immersion in the preserved forest.

Beto Correia, leader of the Apepu community, emphasizes the importance of the initiative. “Our community has a lot to tell, stories of our grandparents, legends, knowledge about plants and animals,” he says.

The name of the community, according to Correia, is linked to the apepu orange (Citrus aurantium), a very common fruit in the region. The leaves, stem and flowers of the apepu were widely used by the locals.

Tour instructions:

– bring insect repellent, sunscreen and a container with frozen water;
