Approval of Foz do Iguaçu airport runway advances to new phase

The concessionaire claims to have completed the structural interventions; the next step is to implement the instrument landing system.

The approval of the extended section of the runway at Foz do Iguaçu International Airport has now entered its final stage. The new phase is under the responsibility of the Department of Airspace Control (Decea).

According to CCR Airports, which manages the air terminal, the structural part, in which the concessionaire invested R$ 25 million, was completed in December.

From now on, Decea will implement the instrument landing system, known by the acronym ILS.

The system ensures precision and safety during landing, especially in conditions of poor visibility. In Foz do Iguaçu, situations such as fog and heavy rain often occur at various times of the year.

“This is a complex procedure, which is conducted by DECEA,” says CCR Aeroportos. “The concessionaire will provide the agency with all possible support during this stage.”

Once approval is complete, the Foz do Iguaçu International Airport runway will be able to be used in its entirety, measuring 2.858 meters. Currently, only the old section, measuring 2.194 meters, is authorized for use.

The extension will allow the operation of larger aircraft, which operate long-haul flights and transport international tourists. When opened, the Foz do Iguaçu runway will be the second largest in the Southern Region of Brazil.

Full release of the runway

Regarding the deadline, CCR Aeroportos informs that it continues to work together with regulatory bodies to comply with all requirements.

The priority, according to the concessionaire, is for “the extended runway to enter into operation as soon as possible”.

The approval of the new section of the track was not part of the concession contract, signed in 2021, during the government of Jair Bolsonaro.

Previously, the Foz do Iguaçu terminal was under the administration of the Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company (Infraero).
