Bulletin indicates 21 deaths from respiratory syndromes in Foz

Most cases continue to be caused by the influenza A virus; vaccines are available at primary health care units.

Bulletin released this Monday, 9th, by the Epidemiological Surveillance of Foz do Iguaçu, indicates the occurrence of 21 deaths due to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SRAG) in the city.

The data relates to the period from January this year to today and corresponds to a total of 718 notifications of SARS.

Of this total, 275 cases resulted in negative tests; 176 are under investigation; 143 cases were caused by other respiratory viruses; 99, by viruses influence; 21 cases, due to covid-19; and 4 due to other non-viral etiological agents.

The deaths were caused by the following viruses and age group:

  • 14 deaths by influence A, in patients aged between 24 and 102 years;
  • 1 due to Covid-19, in a 66-year-old patient;
  • 2 for rhinovirus, in children aged 4 and 15;
  • 1 due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), in an 11-month-old child;
  • 1 due to adenovirus, in a 3-month-old child;
  • 2 under investigation, in patients aged between 40 and 42 years.

Due to the surge in cases of SARS, the State Government has declared an alert to combat respiratory diseases.

The Municipal Hospital remains overcrowded. On Monday, the unit had 242 patients for 218 available beds. The city is awaiting the opening of beds in São Miguel do Iguaçu, announced by the state government, to ease the need for care.

Prevention

The Health Department calls attention to the population to adopt preventive measures to avoid the spread of respiratory viruses.

Some measures that can be adopted:

  • respiratory etiquette: cover your nose and mouth with your forearm or a disposable tissue when sneezing or coughing;
  • clean your hands with soap and water or alcohol gel;
  • avoid crowds and closed or poorly ventilated environments;
  • wear a mask, especially by people with respiratory symptoms or in higher risk environments.

Doctors also emphasize that it is essential to seek care at the onset of the first respiratory symptoms to make a diagnosis and begin treatment as soon as possible.

Vaccines

The vaccine influence trivalent is available in basic health units. It is also being applied at the Handicraft and Food Fair – Fartal.

As of Monday, 63.200 people had been immunized in the city, which has 295.500 inhabitants.

    3 years of pandemic and people haven't learned to take care of themselves.

    Dozens of people locked up, without natural ventilation, in buses, classrooms, etc., all with the excuse that the air conditioning is on, or that it is too cold. The result is there, and it has only just begun.
